Mathematics

            After going through 18 weeks of Mathematics module, I have understood and applied fundamental mathematical principles such as basic algebra, trigonometry, properties of circles, area, volume, differentiation, integration and statistics. Basically, this module has 2 assignments and 2 tests. After going through the tests, I found out I am able to analyze and solve problems that involves various mathematical principles. Besides that, I was also being able to apply fundamental mathematics knowledge in built environment context. The lecture class has taught me to understand the concepts of differential calculus and its usage in problem solving in a better way. It really extended my understanding of mathematical concepts and application.

             Assignment 1 was about to choose 9 objects found in our daily lives (preferably objects related to construction) in a group of 5 members. We were required to calculate the total surface area and volume of the objects. Subsequently, by adopting suitable ratio, we drew all surface areas on an A3 size paper for each object.  After undergo this assignment, I have learned the appropriate method to calculate the area and volume of 3D objects. I have also increased my observational skills as well as my measurement skills during the process of measuring the objects. Next, I learned the proper way to analyze and document data. Besides, I have applied the fundamental mathematical principles, such as area and volume through this assignment. Thus, this assignment has brought me to get familiar with the geometry of plane and 3-D shapes.

 

                

           The task for Assignment 2 was to form a group of 5 and then discuss and propose a specific statistical study (preferably involves continuous data). We were required to design a surveying form and complete minimum 100 survey forms. After collecting the survey forms, we were required to organize and present our data by using appropriate diagrams, such as histogram, pie chart or etc. Finally, we analyzed and then concluded our data. Through this assignment, I have learned how to solve my daily problems using various mathematical principles. As a group, after went through some discussions, we created our own questionnaires and distributed to the students to conduct our survey. Then, we collected it back, organized it and presented it by the use of chart. We drew out our conclusion for simple statistics data. Through the process of organizing and analyzing the data, we applied the fundamental mathematical principles to get the mean, median and mode. 

            In a nutshell, this module has taught me the essential of mathematical skills as I have enhanced my mathematical skills in problem solving through the lecture class every week. At first, I always thought that mathematics is very hard to understand, but after undergo the lecturer class and completing the exercises that the lecturer gave us in class every week, I have extended my understanding of mathematical concepts and I am very sure it is going to help me in my studies and career in the future.
